How to send USDT with no TRX on your balance

Short answer
You can send USDT without TRX if you first get Energy on your address (~65,000 or ~131,000) and, if needed, Bandwidth. The simplest way is to put a little TRX in your wallet and send 2.5 TRX through the instant purchase. If you have no TRX at all, pay for Energy from another wallet. Note that some wallets, such as Trust Wallet, still require a TRX reserve.
You can send USDT without TRX if you first get Energy on your address and, if needed, Bandwidth. The TRON network burns TRX only when these resources are missing. If they are already there, the transfer goes through without burning anything.
The simplest way is to put a little TRX in your wallet and send 2.5 TRX through the instant purchase. If you have no TRX at all, Energy can be paid for from another wallet. Note that some wallets, such as Trust Wallet, still require a TRX reserve.
Why the wallet asks for TRX
Every USDT transfer uses two resources:

The wallet does not need TRX for its own sake. It needs it to burn in place of missing resources. Without Energy, that is ~6.85 TRX per transfer to an address with USDT and ~13.35 TRX to a new address.
So if Energy is already on the address, no TRX needs to be burned. Bandwidth is usually covered by the free daily allowance.
Method 1. Instant purchase from your own wallet
Works if the wallet has at least a few TRX.
- Check the address. The checker shows the balance, Energy and whether the address is activated.
- Choose the amount. 2.5 TRX for one transfer to an address with USDT (65,000). 5 TRX for a transfer to a new address or exchange (131,000). 7.5 TRX for three transfers.
- Send exactly that amount of TRX from the same wallet you will send USDT from.
- Wait 3–10 seconds. Energy arrives on the address the TRX came from.
- Send the USDT within an hour.
After the purchase, your balance may show 0 TRX. That is fine if the Energy is already on the address.
Method 2. TRX from an exchange to your wallet, then the purchase
If the wallet has no TRX at all but you have an exchange account:
- Withdraw a little TRX from the exchange to your wallet, for example 5–10.
- If the address is new, the first incoming TRX transaction activates it.
- Then, from your own wallet, send TRX for Energy as in method 1.
Important: do not pay for Energy directly from an exchange. Energy goes to the address that sent the TRX. If you pay from an exchange, the exchange gets the Energy, not you.
Method 3. Pay from another wallet by invoice
If you have no TRX but hold USDT or TRX in another wallet, a one-time rental paid by invoice works. In the order, you enter the address that needs Energy and pay from any of your wallets in TRX or USDT. Terms are on the pricing page.
When you will still need TRX
- Wallet reserve. Trust Wallet checks that the balance has about 28 TRX, even if Energy is there. Details in Trust Wallet 28 TRX.
- Free Bandwidth ran out. If there were many transactions in a day, the network burns a little TRX for Bandwidth.
- Address not activated. A new address needs activation. With us, it adds 1.5 TRX to the order. See address activation.
How to tell which case is yours
Paste the address into the checker. If it is not activated, you will see that right away. If Energy is 0 and TRX is low, the checker will suggest the right amount.
What to do if the transfer already failed
If you tried to send USDT with an empty balance and got FAILED – OUT OF ENERGY, your USDT is still there. Only the TRX that was on the address was burned.
Burned TRX cannot be returned, but there is no need to repeat the mistake. Get Energy using one of the methods above and send the transfer again. More in FAILED – OUT OF ENERGY.
