Why your USDT TRC-20 transfer is not going through: 5 reasons

Short answer
A USDT TRC-20 transfer usually fails for one of five reasons: not enough Energy, not enough TRX for Bandwidth or the wallet reserve, a wrong address or network, a new recipient that needs ~131,000 Energy instead of 65,000, or Energy bought only after a failed attempt. Start by checking your address. It will show what is missing.

Start with an address check. It is free and shows your TRX balance, Energy, Bandwidth and activation status. Below is each reason and what to do about it.
Reason 1. Not enough Energy
A USDT transfer is a smart contract call, and it needs Energy. There is no free Energy allowance. If the address has no Energy, the network burns TRX. If there is not enough TRX either, the transaction fails with the status FAILED – OUT OF ENERGY.
What to do: get Energy before the transfer. Through the instant purchase, that is 2.5 TRX for 65,000 Energy. Energy arrives in 3–10 seconds. More in the article FAILED – OUT OF ENERGY.
Reason 2. Not enough TRX for Bandwidth or the reserve
Besides Energy, a transfer uses about 350 units of Bandwidth. An account gets roughly 600 units free per day. If that allowance is used up, the network burns a little TRX.
Some wallets add their own rules. For example, Trust Wallet asks you to keep about 28 TRX on the balance, even if you already have Energy.

Reason 3. Wrong address or network
A TRON address starts with the letter T and has 34 characters. An address in a different format belongs to another network, and a USDT TRC-20 transfer to it will not go through.

Reason 4. New recipient: twice as much Energy
If the recipient does not hold USDT yet, the transfer needs about 131,000 Energy instead of 65,000. The same applies to transfers to an exchange address.

What to do: if you are not sure whether the recipient holds USDT, enter their address in the second field of the checker. It will tell you whether you need 65,000 or 131,000.
Reason 5. Energy bought after a failed attempt
A common situation: the transfer failed, the person bought Energy and waits for the first transaction to go through. But the failed transaction is already recorded on the blockchain. It cannot be topped up.
Burned TRX is not returned either. Energy has to be on the address before the transfer, and then you send the USDT again.
What to do if the transfer did not go through
- Stay calm. If the transaction is FAILED, your USDT is still in the wallet.
- Check the address in the checker: how much TRX, Energy and Bandwidth it has.
- Verify the recipient address: starts with T, 34 characters, first and last 4 characters match.
- Choose the Energy amount: 65,000 for an address with USDT, 131,000 for a new address or exchange.
- Send TRX from your own wallet to the payment address. Not from an exchange, or the Energy goes to the exchange.
- Repeat the transfer within an hour, while the Energy is active.
If your address is not activated yet
A new TRON address becomes active after its first incoming TRX transaction. If your address is not activated, address activation is added to the order. It costs 1.5 TRX.
What not to do
- Pay for Energy with TRX sent from an exchange.
- Buy Energy long in advance. Whatever is left after it expires is not refunded.
- Give anyone your seed phrase or private key. Energy only needs your public address.
FAQ
Why does the transfer fail only when sending to an exchange? An exchange deposit address needs about 131,000 Energy for a USDT transfer, like a new address. If your address has 65,000, that is not enough.
The wallet says "insufficient funds", but I have USDT. Is it the same problem? Almost always, yes. The wallet does not have enough TRX to burn instead of Energy, or for its own reserve. The USDT itself is still there.
Does the transfer amount matter? No. 1 USDT and 10,000 USDT use the same amount of Energy.
